Agri-retailers Receive Enviromental Respect Awards
Flint Holbrook at 4:16, May 14 2009

Every year 20 farm retailers are chosen by DuPont(R) Crop Protection, CropLife(R) magazine and Farm Chemicals International(R) magazine as winner of the Environmental Respect Award.  This award is given to agribusiness retailers who demonstrate good stewardship of the environment.  See Farm Suppliers in 20 States honored with Environmental Respect Awards.

The Environmental Respect Awards were founded in 1990 when 400 dealers from 30 states shared their stories of environmental respect.  Some of these dealers shared stories of implementing an emergency response plan, or effectively training employees.  Since this 1990 5,000 agribusinesses in the United States have applied for the award and only 300 have received it.  In the last two years the international arm of the Environmental Respect Awards organization has seen involvement of 180 retailers in 18 countries.

This is my first time seeing anything about this award and I find it very interesting.  We hear about Farmers or manufacturing companies receiving awards for being environmental stewards but normal the retailer is overlooked.  The Agri-retailer is a very important part of the distribution of agriculture products and if they were not environmentally responsible then it could lead to inefficiency, and be a real headache for customers and those located around the business.

Obama's Farm Program Reform
Flint Holbrook at 6:55, May 11 2009

I stumbled across an article today on the EWG blog about Obama's firm stance on farm Program reform.  It sure seems like to me the President has done a alot of reforming lately, but this may not be a bad thing to reform.  If I understand correctly the last farm program reform took place last year with the switch from DCP to the ACRE program.  I added the article to the site you can read it at http://agriscribe.com/disp_article.php?aid=2447.

Obama is unhappy that the current susidy payout is maxed at $750,000 per person, he wants it to be changed to $250,000.  Thinking about some of the farming operations around the country $250,000 wouldn't even pay the equipment loans for a year.  I am concerned that the President is under-estimating the risk and the costs involved with farming.

It also bothers me that he wants to cut the farm subsidy program but add a line of welfare to the budget for infant nutrition.  I want infants to be healthy as much as the next guy, but is it really the taxpayers responsiblity to pay for people's children that they shouldn't have had in the first place.  Maybe I am crazy but I do not believe whatsoever in a handout!

I sincerely hope that through these changes all farmers can keep farming.  Obama may not know this but it is these very farmers he is trying to effect that fill his mouth with fancy taxpayer bought food.
